The Research Historian plays a pivotal role in supporting the mission of Tryon Palace. The position combines historical research, project management, programming, and information management skills.
The Research Historian responds to information requests from staff and the public, provides research support for the interpretation of buildings and landscapes, and collaborates to develop engaging public programming. Content is shared through articles, exhibits, social media posts, reports, and interpretive plans.
This is a highly collaborative role, requiring the candidate to work across branches and communicate clearly and effectively. The chosen candidate will work closely with the Education team to develop programs and historical interpretation, assess research program needs, and conduct both primary and secondary research.
Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Exercise autonomy and responsibility in the timely development and completion of research projects.
- Work with Education Team to develop accurate historical interpretation.
- Engage with a wide audience through lectures, programs, and written texts.
- Respond to staff and public requests for research assistance.
- Manage the Carraway Research Library, maintain reference files, and assist staff with records retention.
- Manage library acquisition budget and purchasing.
Management Prefers:
- Demonstrated experience writing historical pieces (whether through short- and long-form, exhibit content, social media, etc.) for a wide audience.
- Demonstrated experience speaking in public.
- Considerable knowledge of North Carolina and American history.
- Familiarity with archival methods and best practices.
- Demonstrated experience in primary and secondary historical research methods.
Salary Range: $39,671.00 - $47,565.00
