    The primary purpose of this position is to support the museum’s educational mission to engage the public and support learning initiatives through programming. The Public Programs Branch Head supervises the daily operations of the Public Programs Branch of the Education Section. They are responsible for the overall strategy of the public programming team, including the planning, marketing, execution, and evaluation of both virtual and in-person programs. The position also oversees the branch’s budget, manages partnerships with sponsors and external organizations, and works closely with other museum departments to integrate public programs with exhibits and educational efforts and supervises special projects, ensuring that all activities align with the museum’s goals.

    Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

    • Leading the branch in annual program planning and overseeing the development and implementation of individual programs and series.

    • Interpreting and evaluating program statistics and providing reports on outcomes.

    • Tracking and managing program and grant budgets, ensuring efficient resource allocation.

    • Conducting primary and secondary source research for the development of virtual and in-person educational programs and exhibits.

    • Participating in community conversations and engaging audiences to understand the needs and interests of the public audience.

    • Writing and producing promotional and fundraising materials including printed pieces and online content.

    • Coordinating with museum staff, support groups, external organizations, and community partners to develop and enhance education and promotional opportunities.

    • Developing and implementing public programs for audiences of all ages, including youth, families, and adults.  

    • Other duties as assigned.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

    Qualified candidates must have or be able to:

    • Demonstrated experience developing educational programs.

    • Demonstrated experience managing multiple projects simultaneously. 

    • Demonstrated experience directing a team.

    • Demonstrated experience with fundraising and/or budget management. 

    Management Prefers:

    • A broad knowledge of North Carolina history and the diverse nature of its residents.
    • Demonstrated experience organizing public events.
