Join Our Team as a Historic Costumer at Tryon Palace!
Are you passionate about history, fashion, and bringing the past to life? Tryon Palace is seeking a skilled Historic Costumer to oversee our reproduction costume collection, ensuring historical accuracy and craftsmanship for staff, school groups, and the public. If you have experience in costume construction, historical research, and hands-on sewing techniques, this is your opportunity to create and maintain period-appropriate attire in a dynamic and engaging environment.
What You’ll Do:
- Design, construct, and maintain an extensive collection of reproduction costumes.
- Oversee the daily operations of the costume shop, including repairs, alterations, and fittings.
- Research historical garment construction and sewing techniques to ensure authenticity.
- Manage costume inventory, ordering, and budget.
- Recruit, train, and supervise volunteers.
- Collaborate with the Education Branch to enhance historical interpretation and programming.
What We’re Looking For:
- Strong sewing and costume construction skills, including pattern creation, draping, tailoring, and millinery.
- Knowledge of historical fabrics, notions, and period garment construction.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work with diverse teams.
- Experience in theatrical or museum costuming is preferred.
- Bonus: Experience working with wigs and hairpieces and knowledge of North Carolina and U.S. history.
Position Details:
- Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM, with occasional evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to lift up to 40 pounds, climb ladders, and kneel for fittings.
- Education & Experience: A high school diploma (or GED) plus three years of museum programming experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
