    The Museum of the Southern Jewish Experience is hiring an archivist who will be responsible for the organization, care, and sharing of its growing archival collection, as well as overseeing the daily operation of the museum’s new Chapman Family Research Center. As part of a small, but dedicated museum staff, the person in this position will have a unique opportunity to advance the Museum’s mission and make it a vital part of the region and beyond.

    The Museum of the Southern Jewish Experience explores the many ways that Jews in the American South influenced and were influenced by the distinct cultural heritage of their communities. Through exhibits, collections and programs focused on the unique and remarkable history of Southern Jews, the museum encourages new understanding and appreciation for identity, diversity, and acceptance.

    Major Responsibilities:

    • ·         Accessions, processes, and organizes physical and digital collection material according to archival standards using collection management software (currently PastPerfect) to maintain collection records.
    • ·         Develops policies and procedures for use and security of the collections.
    • ·         Creates access tools for collections such as finding aids and inventories in accordance with archival standards.
    • ·         Digitizes archival material applying archival standards of image capture and description.
    • ·         Rehouses archival material appropriately to promote preservation.
    • ·         Schedules, conducts and processes oral histories both onsite and virtually.
    • ·         Works with staff to prepare physical and digital exhibits and public programming. Makes presentations and leads interactive workshops related to the museum’s archives.
    • ·         Prepares or assists in preparation of grants. Assists in cultivating financial donors.
    • ·         Trains and supervises student archival interns.

    Qualifications:

    • ·         Master’s degree in library science from an accredited institution. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
    • ·         Minimum of two years of experience in a library, special collections, archives, or historical research center environment dealing directly with a collection management system.
    • ·         Demonstrated understanding of archival standards and practices.
    • ·         Strong knowledge and interest in American Jewish and Southern culture, and knowledge of the available resources for exploring both.
    • ·         Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • ·         Must be able to work some evenings and weekends. Willingness and ability to travel occasionally in support of the Museum’s collecting efforts.
    • ·         Experience creating and maintaining WordPress-based website pages a plus.

    Compensation:

    This is a full-time, on-site position with a competitive salary range of $50,000-$58,000 and benefits package.
