Job Responsibilities
Job Purpose:
The South Carolina Arts Commission (SCAC), a state government agency dedicated to equitable access to the arts and the cultivation of creativity, seeks a passionate leader who will manage a diverse grant portfolio and collaborate closely with arts leaders to foster a vibrant cultural landscape. This position will support the growth of the arts sector throughout South Carolina and advance the transformative power of the arts in our communities. The successful candidate will have a strong background in arts administration, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to advancing the arts.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Arts Industry Director
- Develops and administers short and long-term planning goals and guidelines for SCAC assigned grant categories in accordance with agency mission, values, and strategic plan.
- Develops and administers short and long-term planning goals and annual work-plan for SCAC assigned programs and projects in accordance with agency mission, values, and strategic plan.
- Develops and administers budget for SCAC assigned programs, projects, and grants in accordance with agency mission, values, and strategic plan.
- Facilitates group processes, including grant panels, webinars, & other learning, and community-building experiences, both in person and online.
- Represents SCAC at local, statewide, and national cultural activities, meetings, and conferences, as well as on boards and committees.
- Supervises up to two employees, providing guidance, support, ongoing assessment, and mentorship.
- Develops and implements post-project activities in assigned programmatic areas, including evaluations, assessments, and acknowledgements.
- Assigned grants: arts project support, general operating support, operating support for small organizations, folk and traditional arts projects for organizations, emerging arts leaders, partnerships, and special projects.
- Works in partnership with Arts Learning Director and other program staff members to develop think tanks, professional learning, and affinity groups for arts organizations and arts leaders.
- Ensures accessibility and equity through grants advisement. Serves as a liaison with and provides technical assistance and consultative services to arts organizations and arts providers.
- Works closely with consultants contracted to provide training and services related to South Carolina’s Arts sector.
- Identifies potential partners for Arts Industry grants and programs.
- Builds relationships for collaboration opportunities for Artist Industry offerings.
Other Duties as Assigned
- Participates in agency strategic planning.
- Collaborates closely with other agency programs and departments.
- Fulfills other duties consistent with supporting agency projects, programs, and events.
Knowledge, Experience, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of the agency's mission, programs, and objectives.
- Knowledge and experience reflecting a broad background in the arts with experience working in arts programming, arts planning, program development and implementation, community engagement, and grant application processes.
- Knowledge of governmental cultural policy and current trends in the arts in general.
- Knowledge of trends in South Carolina’s for and non-profit arts sector.
- Knowledge of needs, makeup, and dynamics of communities, local arts councils, and community arts groups.
- Experience working in diverse capacities with people who represent a broad spectrum of socio-cultural and socio-economic positions.
- Experience in facilitating group processes (i.e., panels, community meetings, learning experiences), both in person and virtual.
- Experience working in rural communities or economic development.
- Experience in program implementation and evaluation.
- Knowledge of grant allocation programs.
- Experience in explaining complex processes to various stakeholders.
- Proficiency in research and strategic planning.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to work on multiple projects.
- Excellent communication skills and self-management of time and work.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Suites, cloud-based database and project management technologies, internet research, and video conferencing platforms.
- Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships and communicate in a professional manner with agency executives, staff, board, funders, governmental officials, and the public.
- Ability to take initiative and consistently meet deadlines.
- Ability to exercise excellent judgment and discretion.
- Ability to speak Spanish is a bonus.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
- A Bachelor's degree* and three (3) years of experience in the assigned programmatic arts area.
- Punctuality, regular attendance, and adherence to daily work schedule are essential.
- Statewide travel, evening, and weekend work is sometimes required, as well as light lifting and long periods of sitting.
- The employee may be required to operate a state vehicle; must possess and maintain a valid S.C. driver's license.
- Employment is contingent upon the results of a favorable reference check and a criminal background check, which includes information from the S.C. Law Enforcement Department (SLED).
* Degree must be from an institution of higher learning recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.
Preferred Qualifications
A Bachelor's degree* in an arts discipline, arts administration, arts education, public administration, or business administration and five (5) years of professional experience in arts management, program development, or related areas. An equivalent combination of training and experience may be substituted for the degree.
* Degree must be from an institution of higher learning recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.
