The National WWII Museum seeks a Librarian for its Madlyn and Paul Hilliard Research Library. Reporting to the Senior Registrar and Director of Collections Management, the Librarian is responsible for providing diverse audiences with access to a growing collection of personal memoirs, biographies, unit histories, and scholarly literature about World War II. Working within the Collections & Exhibits department, this role involves collaborating closely with the Archives Manager to field inquiries and offer expert reference services to researchers. Additionally, the Librarian will oversee and develop the Library's collection, ensuring its growth and relevance. The Librarian is also responsible for managing the assets of the Library through best practice standards of care and thorough cataloging.
Requirements:
Collection Management
- Establish and maintain intellectual and physical control of the Library collection in accordance with best practices and accreditation standards, working closely with the Director of Collections Management and the Archives Manager.
- Shape the Library collection, acting as the point person for the selection and purchase of reference books and research materials, in collaboration with curators and historians.
- Oversee cataloging and maintain standards for Library collections.
- Administer and maintain the Library database, OCLC Worldshare Management Services (WMS).
Research Services and Training
- Serve as the initial contact for Collections & Exhibits research queries, directing inquiries and facilitating reference assistance to Museum staff and external researchers wishing to use print and/or digital resources on site.
- Provide training to Library users to facilitate access to collections. Lead workshops in Library research for staff and, along with other Education & Access staff, for teachers and students.
Engagement and Outreach
- Engage staff, researchers, and the general public by providing connections to Library resources.
- Correspond with authors and donors to evaluate materials offered to the Museum for incorporation into the Library. Track Library donations.
Administrative and Supervisory
- Supervises volunteers and interns in support of Library objectives.
- Implements and evaluates policies and procedures for the Library to include a robust program of services which promote the Museum’s role as a leader in WWII education.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) degree required.
- Minimum 3 years professional experience working in a library with increasing responsibilities required.
- Demonstrated knowledge of library acquisition, cataloging and reference services required.
- General knowledge of World War II era history is required.
- Proficiency in library management databases, WMS preferred.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills as well as strong organizational skills.
- Willingness to work a flexible schedule.
- Ability to lift, carry and place library materials on shelves, including overhead, up to 25 pounds without assistance.
- Ability to climb ladders up to 12 feet.
