    Registrar (16-month temporary position)

    Atlanta History Center seeks a Registrar to assist with implementing an IMLS Museums for American-funded collections project. This position will work with collections and education staff to research, augment, and improve records and documentation of 1,000 museum object records for the purpose of publishing these records online. This position corresponds with permanent and project staff, research collection items, creating detailed and easy-to-understand content and context for each record, and entering all relevant research and data into the institution's ReDiscovery Proficio collections management software database. The Registrar works with project staff to ensure the care and safety of collections and ensures that all collections policies and procedures are observed.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Research and disseminate information gathered for at least 1,000 objects.
    • Update collections records in ReDiscovery Proficio Collection Management System
    • Collaborate with the Collections team on project and research
    • Communicate with staff regarding the process and any issues
    • Participate in weekly Project Committee meetings of inventoried records and reviews of web-ready records
    • Verify project numbers for digital surrogates/web-ready items tracked and managed by Collections Manager

    Requirements

    Education & Qualifications

    • M.A. in History, Public History, Museum Studies, or relevant field preferred, BA in History or related field required

    Experience

    •  Minimum three years of experience working with Museum Collections or Research is preferred.

    Skills & Competencies

    • Proficient in museum registration practices and principles
    • Proficient in researching historic objects and writing descriptive text
    • Knowledge and experience handling museum artifacts
    • Experience tracking and managing deadlines
    • Must have a thorough understanding of collections registration and historical research best practices 
    • Understanding of general collections management principles
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required

    Technological Proficiency

    • Proficient with word processing, spreadsheets, and databases; advanced proficiency in collections management software, preferably ReDiscovery Proficio

    Physical

    • Must be able to lift and carry 50 pounds
