    Description

    The Historic New Orleans Collection (THNOC) is a museum, research center, and publisher dedicated to the study and preservation of the history and culture of New Orleans and the Gulf South region. The Collection is currently seeking to fill the position of Director of Communications and Marketing.

    The Director of Communications and Marketing manages all external THNOC communications and promotes clear internal communications to define and enhance public perceptions of THNOC, deliver key institutional messages, and increase awareness of collections, exhibitions, publications, and programs. The Director advises the CEO, the Director of Institutional Advancement, and the Director of Development in making strategic decisions regarding the public advancement of THNOC. 

    The Director of Communications and Marketing implements strategies for marketing, advertising, media relations, public relations, and communications in accordance with our strategic plan. The Director supervises communications staff and works with external marketing partners to plan, budget, and implement all media, communications, and advertising for all THNOC activities including museum exhibitions, research access to collections, public programs, publications, and development. Inter- and cross-departmental collaboration, and external relationship management with community members, media partners, vendors, agencies, and graphic designers is integral to the Director’s role.

    The ideal candidate possesses a minimum of seven years of related experience. This position requires expertise in communication and organizational skills. Additionally, the successful candidate must excel at Microsoft Office and Adobe Suite.  This position requires effective communication skills, proficient computer skills, problem resolution skills, exceptional organizational skills, and the ability to respond to an evolving work environment.  

    This is a full-time position working Monday-Friday. The work hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with some after hours event participation. The Collection offers a competitive salary and a dynamic, educational culture.

    Salary Description

    $82,000 to $98,500 annually

    Job Summary:

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Collaborates internally to develop, drive, and manage internal communication strategies that inform, educate, and engage employees around THNOC’s activities, goals, values, and business strategies.
    • Initiates and directs market and audience research to identify target audiences and develop effective communications plans for targeted audiences using institutional publications, media relations, paid advertising, printed and electronic publicity material, website, social media. 
    • Research, develop, write, and edit copy for written publicity materials, including press releases, website content, direct-mail pieces, advertisements, rack cards, and related items, to effectively promote THNOC’s activities. 
    • Achieve coverage for exhibitions, events, and programming.
    • Serve as the primary point of contact for media.
    • Plan, secure, and coordinate the design of advertising. 
    • Manage the creation and distribution of all ads including radio, digital, and print ads.
    • Collaborate with THNOC website and digital initiatives teams; provide guidance on marketing and communication-related aspects of THNOC’s web presence.
    • Oversee and supervise creation and distribution of content for all social media platforms and channels.
    • Monitor, analyze and report on key metrics, including media coverage, website traffic and social media engagement. Coordinate the collection of the raw data, analyze the statistics, and prepare comprehensive reports for CEO and Board of Directors.
    • Create and implement effective evaluation tools of THNOC’s programs, events, visitor experiences, etc. Coordinate the collection of the raw data, analyze the statistics, and prepare comprehensive reports to provide effective feedback to THNOC leadership and Board of Directors. 
    • Determine expected costs of marketing and advertising initiatives (including design, distribution, postage, and processing). Negotiate contracts and placements throughout the year. 
    • Manage third-party marketing, advertising, and printing partners by monitoring budgets, costs, timelines, and related items to ensure high quality work is produced within financial and time constraints.

    Required Job Qualifications:

    Education:

    • Bachelor’s degree in English, communication, journalism, business, or related field.

    Experience:

    • Minimum of seven years of experience in public relations and/or marketing.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    • Comprehensive ability and skill in editing, writing, and researching.
    • Experience in applying various techniques in writing and design to produce work product that effectively engages different audiences.
    • Knowledge and ability in managing staff.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and experience in marketing/design related software, Adobe Creative Suite, and social media platforms.
    • Knowledge of and experience in digital media and online communication.
    • Ability to work as part of a team and collaborate with others as well as demonstrated ability to work independently. 
    • Ability to be flexible and responsive to an evolving work environment. 
    • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously.
    • Ability to meet deadlines.
    • Exceptional attention to detail.
    • Good physical condition with ability to lift 25 pounds.

    Preferred Job Qualifications:

    • Familiarity with the Associated Press Style Guide and the Chicago Manual of Style; print production; and media markets and contacts in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast region.
