    The Kentucky Historical Society (KHS) is seeking a dynamic and service-oriented colleague to work in one of Kentucky’s premier research libraries.

    KHS’s Martin F. Schmidt Research library consists of more than 35,000 books and thousands of other serial, rare imprint, manuscript, graphic, and audiovisual materials. The KHS Reference Services Librarian offers advice and expertise to assist patrons with their research needs. This position also provides critical support for the operations of the library, including shelf preparation, shelving, book binding, cataloging, and special projects to promote the library and its resources.  In doing so, the Reference Services Librarian ensures the stewardship of one of the top Kentucky history and genealogy collections in the nation.

    The Kentucky Historical Society (KHS), formed in 1836, is an agency in Kentucky’s Tourism, Arts, and Heritage Cabinet.  The KHS campus has three sites in historic downtown Frankfort:  The Old State Capitol; the Kentucky Military History Museum; and the Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History serving as KHS headquarters with a signature museum, exhibits, library, research facilities, object and archival collections, museum store, and more.  KHS is a Smithsonian Affiliate and has full American Alliance of Museums accreditation.

    The essential responsibilities include:

    • Staffing the KHS library reference desk to assist patrons with research and to create a supportive environment for their visit
    • Implementing operational and stewardship support for the KHS library collection
    • Completing historical and genealogical research service requests from offsite patrons

    Qualifications:

    Education/Experience: A Bachelor’s degree in a related field is required. A Master’s degree in Library and Information Science or equivalent is preferred. At least one (1) year experience working with reference services in a public setting is preferred.
     
    Communication:  Must demonstrate excellent people and presentation skills and be able to speak professionally with diverse groups of people in both formal and informal settings.
     
    Computer Skills:  Must be proficient in Microsoft Office’s suite of applications and online research databases as well as familiar with library cataloging software.

    This is a full-time position located in Frankfort, Ky., that reports to the KHS Head of Libraries and Archives. This is an unclassified (non-merit) position pursuant to KRS 18A.115(1)(u). The annual salary for this position is $33,662.88.  The regular work schedule is Tuesday through Saturday with a 37.5-hour workweek, but the position will require occasional evening or holiday hours as needed to provide for the needs of KHS in its programming and services for its museum and event guests.
