    POSITION OVERVIEW

    The Museum Tour Guide leads tour groups of either adults or children through the exhibition galleries, greets and welcomes visitors, provides information, and processes admissions and memberships. Additionally, this position may assist in outreach efforts that expands the reach of the Heritage House into the community.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    This position leads scheduled tours of "Clotilda: The Exhibition" at the Africatown Heritage House, providing visitors with an enriched educational experience by explaining the exhibits on display. Duties include, but are not limited, to:

    • Escorting tour groups through the exhibition's galleries and explain exhibits using techniques of storytelling, dialogue and inquiry.

    • Providing interesting, in-depth information and insights about the people, places, and events covered in the exhibition

    • Researching and explore various topics covered in the exhibition to include appropriate information in the tour commentary.

    • Accurately answering common questions from visitors.

    • Giving visitors directions to nearby points of interest.

    • Connecting visitors with relevant resources to learn more about the history of Africatown and the community today.

    QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

    A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in education, history, museum studies, or a closely related discipline, and a minimum of one year of practical work experience in a teaching or museum environment is preferred. At minimum, a high school degree or GED equivalent with one year of prior working experience in dealing directly with the public is required.

    REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

    • Knowledge of and fluency in local history.

    • Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills.

    • Strong interpersonal skills, an interest in working with people, and an enthusiastic, out going personality.

    • Ability to present a professional appearance and friendly manner.

    • Ability to assemble and manage small groups.

    • Ability to work as part of a team and effectively coordinate activities with Museum staff and volunteers.

    • Ability to interact with a broad and diverse range of individuals and age groups in a courteous, positive, and personable manner.

    • Ability to learn and follow appropriate scripts.

    • Ability to engage individual visitors and families in impromptu tours or conversations.

    • Ability to take the initiative and deal skillfully in resolving minor conflicts or complaints.

    WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    Work is generally performed indoors in a museum gallery setting. This position involves speaking, walking and standing for extended periods of time, bending, twisting, climbing stairs, and occasional lifting of objects weighing up to ten (10) pounds. Computer usage involving repetitive hand and wrist motion is also necessary. The schedule for this position is Tuesday – Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This position will work virtually all of their scheduled shifts at Africatown Heritage House although for special events/programs it is possible for this position to be scheduled at any of the History Museum of Mobile constituent sites.

    COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

    This is a full-time (40 hours per week), non-exempt, hourly position. The starting hourly rate is $16.28 per hour. This position is also eligible for health, dental, and vision insurance as well as a 401(k) account.
