    Job Overview 
    The South Carolina State Museum (SCSM) is currently searching for an experienced and innovative Exhibition & Fabrication Specialist to join our Exhibition Design & Fabrication Team.  Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Exhibition & Fabrication Specialist serves a vital role and will participate extensively in the execution of the museum’s ambitious Reimagine the Experience project, renovating over 150,000 square feet of permanent exhibitions, programming spaces and collection storage.

    Additionally, the Exhibition Specialist will be a part of an innovative team of professionals dedicated to telling South Carolina's diverse stories.   As the storytellers of South Carolina, the South Carolina State Museum (SCSM) strives to share the rich artistic, natural, technological and cultural diversity of the state through its permanent collections, programs, exhibitions and digital content.

    The SCSM is the largest museum in South Carolina, stewarding over 1.1 million objects and Agency State of South Carolina Agency State Museum Commission Address specimens and welcoming 5 million+ visitors over its 35-year history. The museum has recently embarked on a renovation of 150,000 square feet of its exhibition, programmatic and collection storage spaces occupying four floors of a historic 1890s textile mill on the National Register of Historic Places.

    Position details:

    • Performs complex fabrication and repair tasks in areas including carpentry, metal work, light electrical, painting and coating, design and model making.  
    • Builds and sometimes designs needed exhibit components or exhibit areas and completes assigned projects with a high degree of craftmanship and creativity, meeting deadlines.
    • Provides preventive maintenance and repairs on exhibits in a timely fashion. Initiates minor repairs and improvements. Produces and installs 2-D and 3-0 Exhibit components and elements.
    • Estimates and purchases materials for certain projects.
    • Assists in installing and maintaining museum- wide and exhibition specific media equipment.
    • Supports workspace, signage, and seasonal décor updates and upgrades throughout the museum.
    • Performs other duties as required.

    Minimum and Additional Requirements

    • High School Diploma and five years of carpentry related work experience.
    • Combination of maintenance, repair construction experience and training.
    • Thorough knowledge and skill in finish carpentry and metal work, model making and related construction and repair tasks.
    • Knowledge and use of power tools, lathes, planners, and related equipment.
    • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and plans.
    • Knowledge of conservation practices.
    • Knowledge of Word, Excel, PowerPoints, and basic computer search engines.
    • Must be able to climb ladders, lift at least 50 lbs.
    • Must be able to navigate tight spaces, bend, stoop.
    • Must be licensed to drive a motor vehicle.

    SALARY: $38,985.00 - $55,559.00 Annually

    HIRING RANGE - MIN.: $38,985.00  HIRING RANGE - MAX.: $55,559.00
