Advertised Job Summary
The individual in this position is responsible for the direction, development, maintenance, use and research of McKissick Museum’s varied collections of material culture, natural science, university-related objects, and fine art numbering in total approximately 20,000 cataloged objects. The person in this position is responsible for the care of objects in the collection, as well as organizes, develops, and produces pertinent research, exhibitions, publications and educational materials in other formats such as web applications. The individual is responsible for directing collections growth in keeping with the Museum’s mission and strategic vision. This person will report to the executive director. Internal title: Curator of Collections.
Minimum Qualifications
Master’s degree in history, museology or a related field; or a bachelor’s degree and 2 years of related experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in American Studies, Anthropology, Art History, Folklife, Geography, Geology, History, Public History, Museum Studies or related field and 2 years of experience; or bachelor’s degree in American Studies, Anthropology, Art History, Folklife, Geography, Geology, History, Public History, Museum Studies or related field and 4 years related experience.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Demonstrable experience with all aspects of permanent collections stewardship. Exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail, strong sense of responsibility, and ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize workflow. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Knowledge of environmental hazards and controls. Familiarity with Microsoft Word, collections information management systems in general and with Past Perfect in particular. Content knowledge relevant to the Museum’s collections’ strengths desired.
