    Overview:

    The Children’s Museum of Wilmington (CMOW) has been serving families throughout southeastern NC for 25 years.  We offer 17,000 square feet (indoor/outdoor) of interactive exhibits and daily educational programming focused on science, health, literacy and art. We employ six full-time staff supported by 20+ part-time employees, volunteers, and

    interns.  The CMOW is committed to the development of essential foundational skills in children, igniting a lifelong love of learning.  We welcome 55,000+ guests to the Museum annually, both local and vacationing visitors.  Twenty-five percent of our admissions are offered at free or reduced cost.

    The CMOW is seeking an Executive Director (ED) who will lead us to the next level of our museum.  We are looking for a visionary and mission-driven ED who can work with the Board to build a team and guide and grow the CMOW’s strategic priorities, which include the goal of moving to a new location.  A successful candidate must have capital campaign experience and be skilled in business and financial management, community engagement, and fundraising. This position will require strong interpersonal skills and 5 years of experience managing high-functioning teams.  We are looking for a leader with the ability to energize others.

    Responsibilities:

    • ·         In partnership with the Board of Directors, implement the strategic priorities and continuously assess museum operations to ensure business success and delivery of our mission.
    • ·         Oversee the CMOW’s daily operations, including staff supervision, exhibits and programming, marketing, guest management, facility management and budget accountability.
    • ·         Manage all collaborative relationships with key strategic partners, donors, vendors and volunteers.
    • ·         Maintain a community presence with a goal to increase the CMOW’s visibility, recognition and respect.
    • ·         Work with the Development Director to create donor opportunities. Actively engage in grants and fundraising.
    • ·         Ensure high performance from all employees of the CMOW and provide training and professional development. Build and maintain a strong, cohesive, and diverse team.
    • ·         Promote diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility.

     Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    • ·         Minimum of 8 years of related work experience, including 5 years of managerial experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience, preferably in a children’s museum. Experience moving an existing museum to a new facility is ideal.
    • ·         A bachelor’s degree is required, and a master's degree is preferred.
    • ·         Demonstrated positive and effective working relations with staff, a Board of Directors, donors, volunteers, and the public. Self-directed, motivated, and team oriented. Described as professional, empathetic, and diplomatic.
    • ·         Demonstrated capacity for creative and critical project strategy and organizing programs and long-term initiatives.
    • ·         A track record of outstanding financial, organizational and fundraising skills, with demonstrated ability to achieve results in a transparent manner.
    • ·         Experience with major gifts, fundraising and capital campaigns.
    • ·         Exceptional interpersonal skills and excellent ability to communicate, both verbally and in writing.
    • ·         Ability to address the public and discuss problems, complaints, and issues tactfully, courteously, and effectively.
    • ·         Demonstrated use of good judgment.

    Terms of Employment:

    • ·         Full-time, reporting to the CMOW Board of Directors
    • ·         Salary range is $72,000 - $102,000, including health insurance and PTO benefits.
