    Position Description

    The Director of Development (DoD) is a full-time exempt member of senior staff. This position is a strategic thought-partner and direct report to the Executive Director (ED) that develops and leads all fundraising and development initiatives at the local and regional level, and manages national and regional funding schedules in collaboration with the full staff. Specifically, this person will design and implement a diversified fundraising strategy across a spectrum of activities including (but not limited to): event based fundraising, membership and donor cultivation, digital and mailing campaigns, corporate sponsorship solicitation, and grant-writing as needed.

    As the first and lead position in the department, we expect the Director of Development to lay out a growth trajectory for the department that ultimately oversees all fundraising and all communication efforts for the museum. The DoD has a rare opportunity to re-imagine what membership, donor cultivation, and fundraising should look like for a mission-driven non-collecting contemporary art institution. We are looking for a story-teller-in-chief that can take a thriving and impressive program schedule and leverage it into sustainable support for the organization as a whole. This position will work collaboratively with all other departments to leverage mission based work for the long-term sustainability of the organization as a whole. We are looking for someone that is not only vested in our mission, but vested in the success of their peers and can put the mission of the organization at the forefront of their work.     Essential Functions

    ● Serves as the guiding architect of a cohesive and comprehensive fundraising program that celebrates a culture of philanthropy and extends opportunities for those who embrace Alabama Contemporary’s priorities, mission, and values to participate in support of that work.

    ● Provides strategic and operational fundraising leadership for both ongoing initiatives and special campaigns that cultivate local and regional ‘buy-in’.

    ● Establishes ways to build capacity to support a growing organization, and emphasizes the identification and cultivation of the next generation of donors/ and new thought in the culture of giving.

    ● Manages the national and regional grant calendar and collaborates with staff to ensure major asks are competitive, strategic, and all deadlines are met

    ● Takes an active role in the identification of possible funding sources, and in grant preparation and reporting.

    ● Oversees communication efforts and PR to ensure our voice is consistent, clear, and that all acknowledgement is made to funders and supporters as appropriate.

    ● Manages communication schedules and ultimately grows the department to increase the visibility and public profile of the organization as a whole.

    ● Brings together, as well as guides and supports senior staff, board members, and other volunteers to develop fundraising goals and strategies for each giving program.

    ● Oversees and coordinates department specific interns, volunteers, and the volunteer activities of the museum’s Development Committee. As the department grows, it oversees hiring of new staff related to development and communication needs.

    ● Sets clear direction and priorities for the Development Department as it grows. Promotes excellence through well-defined and measurable goals; inspires and motivates staff through fostering a work environment that rewards new ideas and risk-taking, builds confidence, encourages team-based efforts within the museum and across the Museum community, and promotes inclusion and diversity.

    ● Establishes policies, systems, and procedures, with a particular emphasis on ethical standards for soliciting, acknowledging, tracking, and reporting gifts.

    ● Fosters a culture of celebration, collaboration, and continuous improvement utilizing best practices in internal and external relationship-building.

    ● Networks, identifies community partners, cultivates relationships and advocates for the arts in our city as a whole at all times.

    ● Identifies, cultivates, solicits, and stewards gifts and pledges from a portfolio of prospects.

    ● Works to consistently raise the Museum’s public profile.

    ● Provides the highest level of personal support to Board members for their activities on behalf of the museum; ensures that their volunteer experience is meaningful, productive, and enjoyable, and that the Boards’ intellectual and emotional connection to the Museum and each other is strengthened.

    Public Information and Electronic Media

    ● Collaborates with all staff to add to and further our voice and visual identity in all forms;

    ● Writes departmental narrative reports for the annual report;

    ● Oversees, manages and when needed maintains the CRM for new donors, members and corporate sponsors; and communication efforts;

    ● Maintains, updates and tracks donor and fund acknowledgement pages and program sections on the website and print matter;

    ● Designs and implements social media campaigns for development;

    ● Collaborates with the ED to prepare department-related materials for grant applications;

    ● Participates in other ACAC membership and public programs;

    ● Fosters and actively participates in the collegial dialogue, sharing of professional opinions, and advancement of ideas and scholarship related to contemporary art.

    External Relations

    ● Represents Alabama Contemporary Art Center to the public at large

    ● Attends exhibition openings, programs and events as needed

    ● Actively seeks new thought and leadership in the field at large, is teachable in all areas, seeks out professional development and has a strong and ever-evolving sense of best practices

    ● Participates in relevant networking events and is an active agent of positive change in the community at large.


    ● A minimum of 4 years of development experience, with an ability to articulate programmatic objectives and strategically seek support for these endeavors with energy and passion for the Museum’s core values.

    ● A Bachelor’s degree with an advanced degree is preferred.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    ● Extensive knowledge of fundraising principles, techniques, and ethics; an understanding of annual giving, membership support, and planned giving strategies.

    ● Knowledge of the major sources of funding, including foundation, corporate, individual, and government.

    ● Strong interpersonal and public speaking skills; the ability to “Cold Call”, present ideas on the fly, and lead conversations in a productive direction.

    ● Highly organized and able to envision structure where there is none.

    ● Working knowledge of Museum event standards/Museum Standards in general, and able to discern where they apply.

    ● Proven track record in organizing fundraising activities effectively and participating personally in high-level development negotiations.

    ● Excellent writing and communication skills; sound judgment and strong professional presence in delicate situations.

    ● Proficiency and prowess in Microsoft Excel/Google Sheets, Wordpress, mass email software (Mailchimp/Constant Contact), CRM tracking and data analytics, and all word processing applications.

    ● Some travel may be required.

    ● Strong knowledge of contemporary art and/or art history post-industrial age.


    ● Experience in community organizing and in cultivating diverse partnerships;

    ● Experience in Museum work;

    ● Experience with film production. Proficiency with digital video cameras and editing;

    ● Strong photography and graphic design skills;

    ● Proficiency in Adobe Suite design programs.

    ● A deep love of the South, an understanding of its deficits and an eagerness to contribute to solutions and future building within southern identity.

    ● Some duties may require long periods of standing and walking as well as frequent reaching and kneeling, pushing, pulling, carrying, lifting, and moving objects 5 pounds or more.

    Starting Salary for this position is $45,000 per year, plus healthcare. A $1,200.00 relocation reimbursement will be made to any successful candidate moving from outside a 100 mile radius of Mobile for the position, after 3 weeks of work. To Apply visit:
