The Kentucky Historical Society is many things: a library, a museum, an educational institution, a research center. We oversee three historic sites and protect a treasure trove of documents and artifacts for the public. At the heart of it all, we are a network of people dedicated to preserving and exploring Kentucky’s rich and fascinating past. We are a membership organization with over 1,500 members from Kentucky and around the world. We are also a public agency, within the Kentucky Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet; have full American Alliance of Museums accreditation; and are a proud Smithsonian affiliate. A public/private partnership with the Kentucky Historical Society Foundation (KHSF) provides philanthropic support of the Society’s programs and services through monetary, in-kind, and volunteer contributions. This comprehensive system of support ensures we deliver a standard of quality and service to Kentucky history education, research, and collections acquisition and care.
Since 1836, the public has entrusted the Kentucky Historical Society as the keeper of the commonwealth’s legacy. The Kentucky Historical Society continues to re-imagine this commitment by helping Kentuckians recognize the intrinsic value of history and the vital role it plays in addressing the enduring social, economic and sustainability challenges we face today. We look to our past to empower us to action, and in doing so, we understand a consistent pattern of inequity stands out. At KHS, our Prioritizing Diversity & Inclusion initiative guides us through institutional change, fosters an intentional culture of inclusion, and embraces a new chapter in the history of the Commonwealth – one that nurtures respect, compassion, and equity for all Kentuckians.
