    Museum Collections Manager

    The American Printing House for the Blind (APH), a world leader in creating learning solutions and pathways to success for children and adults who are blind or visually impaired, is seeking a Museum Collections Manager. Reporting to the Museum Director, the Museum Collections Manager maintains and creates collection records, provides reference services, provides administrative services, and participates in public programming as required, including leading scheduled tours of the APH museum and factory.

    This position works primarily M-F 8:00am – 4:30pm; however, some night and weekend availability is required.

    MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • ·         Develop, arrange, and describe archival collections in accordance with accepted standards as published by the Society of American Archivists; document such procedures
    • ·         Process, digitize, and preserve archival materials and other collections in the APH museum collection
    • ·         Provide public and internal reference services to museum collections, through public hours and appointment requests
    • ·         Catalog collections using accepted best practices using PastPerfect Museum Software
    • ·         Collaborate in managing loans from or to the APH museum from or to other institutions with other museum staff
    • ·         Develop and supervise collections inventory efforts
    • ·         Develop and supervise plans to monitor collections while on exhibit, maintain exhibits, and clean collections storage spaces
    • ·         Provide expertise and input into the institution’s Collections Plan as needed
    • ·         Train and supervise volunteers and interns working with the collection
    • ·         Oversee transcription and editing of the APH museum oral history project
    • ·         Provide reference services to APH staff and outside contractors in support of upcoming and current exhibitions, publications and other institutional initiatives
    • ·         Assist the Museum Director on annual budgeting, preparation of purchase requisitions, tracking expenses
    • ·         Ordering and maintaining stocks of archival supplies
    • ·         Master tour information and lead guided tours of APH and the Museum as needed
    • ·         Write for social media and virtual experiences as needed
    • ·         Other duties as assigned

     EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

    • ·         Master’s Degree in library science, museum studies or related field is required
    • ·         Minimum of 2 years of archival, professional library, or museum experience with preference given to experience in a medical, legal, or corporate library or archive
    • ·         Knowledge of best practices and archival standards as published by the Society of American Archivists 
    • ·         Experience in or knowledge of archival digitization technologies and digital asset management
    • ·         Excellent writing and verbal communication skills
    • ·         Ability to present a positive and professional impression of APH in presentations to the public and key stakeholders
    • ·         Strong attention to detail with the ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously; shifting priorities in a fast-paced work environment
    • ·         Ability to work independently or in a team environment in support of the department and organization
    • ·         Physical Demands: The duties of this job include sitting, standing, bending over, kneeling, and lifting or moving objects up to 30lbs; climbing stairs, and walking over varied terrain, repeated adjustments to varied lighting conditions, some museum spaces are humidity controlled and are cool in the summer
