    The Atlanta History Center is looking for a highly motivated and results-oriented professional to fill the role within the organization of Urban Agriculturist.  

    The primary responsibility includes all aspects of research, planning, planting, and day-to-day tending of the interpretive historic gardens and living collections at Smith Farm. This position keeps all garden areas at the Farm planted and productive throughout the year, utilizing skills in greenhouse management, integrated pest management, soil improvement, erosion control and drainage, and weed management. The Urban Agriculturist works closely with Guest Experience and Education staff to ensure interpretation of Gardens content is coordinated and accurate, and that the heirloom crops are utilized when possible.        

    Main Duties and Responsibilities

    • Research crop varieties and growing practices to ensure historic accuracy to the 1860’s.
    • Determine crop plans and order all necessary seeds and materials.
    • Perform daily horticultural tasks at Smith Farm and the greenhouse – includes propagation, planting, mulching, watering, weeding, staking, pruning, deadheading, seed saving, programming irrigation and soil improvement practices. 
    • Collaborate with and train Guest Experience and Education staff at Smith Farm to utilize farm produce and effectively communicate horticultural and historic plant use.
    • Assist with the development of interpretive tools for Smith Farm including signage, lesson plans for school tours, homeschool days, summer camps and other public programs.
    • Handle daily care for farm animals up to twice a week – chickens, turkeys, sheep and goats – when Manager of Animal   Collections is not available (training provided).
    • Manage all aspects of on-site composting program, including daily collections from café, tracking regular turnings and temperature readings.
    • Assist with team effort to create an Integrated Pest Management program.
    • Provide a positive visitor and volunteer experience. 
    • Learn about the history and significance of the gardens and collections and be prepared to answer visitor questions and lead tours.

    Other Responsibilities

    • Collaborate with community partners and across departments to develop and assist in garden-related programming at the   AHC and offsite.
    • Exhibit familiarity with and willingness to receive training and work with common landscape hand-held and power equipment. 
    • Perform other maintenance tasks as necessary throughout the campus, including leaf and snow removal, path maintenance and storm damage repairs.
    • Learn unfamiliar plant material in assigned areas, their names and cultural needs.
    • Keep detailed records of plantings, crops, soil amendments and chemical inputs. 
    • Be observant and report back any horticultural, animal, safety or other concerns promptly. 
    • Occasional weekend work may be required, in exchange for regular weekly hours.


    • Associates or Bachelor’s degree in horticulture, agriculture, environmental science or related field from an accredited college or university or demonstrable equivalent in training and experience. 
    • Minimum five years hands-on professional experience growing vegetables, organic methods and experience with composting.
    • Demonstrated communication skills including effective oral/speaking and writing.
    • Knowledge of or demonstrated interest in southeastern agricultural history preferred.
    • Hands-on experience caring for poultry, small ruminants or honeybees a plus.
    • Must be able to sustain moderate physical exertion with full range of body motion for lifting up to fifty pounds.
    • Must demonstrate a history of working independently and in a group setting.
    • Ability to work in all weather conditions.
    • Valid driver’s license.
    • Fluency in English.
    • Computer literacy, including internet research and use of Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel; some training provided if necessary.

    Other Requirements

    • Satisfactory criminal background check.
    • Satisfactory MVR background check, to drive company truck.
    • Proof of COVID-19 vaccination on start date.

    Salary Description    $45,000 - $48,000 annually
