Primary Purpose of the Position: The primary purpose of this position is to provide Historic interpretation, and development and implementation of thematic tours and special programs.
Key Responsibilities: Duties include but are not limited to: • Interpreting the history of the site • Directing the Polk internship & volunteer program • Care and maintenance of artifacts and collection records • Development of temporary exhibits • Research of President Polk and Piedmont NC related topics • Marketing of the historic site utilizing a variety of social media platforms • Off-site presentations and cleanliness of exhibits and public spaces
The North Carolina Division of State Historic Sites is responsible for the stewardship of 27 historic sites that include nearly 5,000 acres of preserved property, 281 historic and modern buildings and 65,000 artifacts spanning the entire breadth of North Carolina’s history from pre European settlement to the 20th century. The President James K. Polk State Historic Site is part of the NC Division of Historic Sites and Properties.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES / COMPETENCIES: To receive credit for your work history and credentials, you must provide the information on the application form. In order to qualify for this position, you must meet ALL the following KSA's listed below: 1. Demonstrated experience in leading tours and creating dynamic, outside of the box programming relating to the subject matter. 2. Demonstrated firsthand knowledge of working with volunteers across a wide variety of age differences. 3. Demonstrated experience in various social media platforms as it relates to promotion of the museum and its associated programming. 4. Demonstrated knowledge of best practices for artifacts and collections care. 5. Must have the ability to create well thought out presentations and present material to a large group. 6. Must have a valid NC Driver's License or be able to obtain one within 30 days of hire. 7. Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds. 8. Must be able to lead groups in a variety of weather situations (cold, heat, etc.). 9. Must be able to stand for long periods of time.
