    Under general supervision, this position is responsible for the overall management and day to day administrative and professional duties for the History Division of the Museums, to include research, documentation, interpretation, maintenance and conservation. Reports to the Director of Museums.


    Responsible for the day-to-day management and operation of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Museum, Lightship Portsmouth and the Marshall Butt Library and Archives, and the Portsmouth Community Colored Library Museum; responsible for the management of the museums' collection and loaned artifacts including, but not limited to, the collecting, inventorying, accessioning, documentation and cataloging of a wide range of social history material, objects, documents, photographs and recordings.

    Manages all library and archive activities, to include the collections database program, inventory and the ongoing program to digitize collections; implements the collection management policy and plan; responsible for ensuring the safety and security of designated areas.

    Responsible for the effective supervision and administration of budget preparation and monitoring expenditures, staff development and training, succession planning, performance management, employee relations, prioritizing and assigning work and related activities; also works as part of a team for exhibition planning, program development, grant writing, budget and training.

    Answers research inquiries from researchers, students and the general public; provides assistance and supervises researchers wishing to consult museum collections and archives directly; researches and contributes to the development of history exhibits and programs; prepares reports on museum attendance as well as other reports and documentation as required.

    Maintains a working relationship with officials in the Department of Navy, the U.S. Coast Guard fifth district, Norfolk Naval Shipyard, other museums, city departments and city officials; promotes and represents the museums as well as the city of Portsmouth through oral presentations to the public, tourism bureaus, civic and business organizations; interacts with collectors, donors, scholars and the community.

    Provides interpretation of museum exhibits; manages cultural events, exhibit openings and other activities as required; serves as the liaison to the Museum's non-profit foundation, and may serve on various history committees and advisory boards; orders and maintains materials and supplies for the operation of facilities and or the care of collections.

    Performs other duties as assigned such as providing assistance throughout the Portsmouth Museums when needed.     Requires a Master's Degree in History, Museum Studies, or a related field, 3-5 years of museum practices and standards, collections management and documentation, exhibition development, curatorial experience, or a related field, and 1-2 years of supervisory experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge of U.S. history, local history and maritime history preferred. Must have writing, research, interpersonal skills, and the ability to conduct primary source research. Experience with museum cataloging software such as Past Perfect, preferred. Proficiency with Microsoft Office preferred.


    May be asked to submit a writing sample. Must be able to work a schedule that includes weekends, holidays, and nights.  An acceptable general background investigation to include a local and state criminal history, sex offender registry check, and a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record. Individuals in this position cannot be listed as having a founded child abuse or neglect complaint.
