    KHS Volunteer Program Coordinator

    The Kentucky Historical Society (KHS) is offering an exciting opportunity to be a part of its Visitor Services unit to promote Kentucky’s history and engage the public with KHS through its three museums located in downtown Frankfort, Kentucky.

    As the agency’s Volunteer Program Coordinator, you will serve as a point of contact with persons interested in volunteering their expertise and time with the Kentucky History Center and Museums.  This includes the recruitment, evaluation, and training of the volunteers.  This position also serves as the liaison between KHS staff and the volunteers helping to place the volunteers with areas of interest within the KHS organization and coordinating their schedules for projects and special events.   This position is a part of KHS’s visitor services unit and helps to support the front-line welcoming services for visitors to KHS.

    The Kentucky Historical Society (KHS) has welcomed more than 1 million visitors since its anchor building, the Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History, opened in 1999 in historic downtown Frankfort. Our mission is to educate and engage the public through Kentucky history in order to meet the challenges of the future.  KHS is an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution and is fully accredited by the American Alliance of Museums.


    • Recruit and place all volunteers within the agency. 
    • Maintain the organization’s relationship between volunteers and KHS.
    • Assist with planning, training, and recruiting volunteers for special events.
    • Assist with the overall functioning of the visitor services unit as needed.

    • Education/Experience – Bachelor’s Degree in communications, history, or related field or equivalent experience working with project management, communications, and recruitment.  Two (2) years of experience with volunteer program management.  Coordination of volunteers at events preferred.
    • Communication - Ability to write and communicate effectively with staff, volunteers, and outside vendors. The ability to work with varying ages, backgrounds, ability levels, and people is required.
    • Electronic Skills – Basic internet, word processing, database management, spreadsheets, and email use. The ability to learn new databases and/or programs as needed is required. Experience with Volgistics or other volunteer management databases is preferred.
    • Physical Demands – Must be able to sit or stand for long periods.  May be required to travel for promotional activities/volunteer fairs.

    This full-time position reports to the Visitor’s Services Manager.  This is an unclassified (non-merit) position according to KRS 18A.115(1)(u).  The annual salary for this position is $34,606.80.  This position has a regular work schedule of Tuesday through Saturday with a 37.5-hour work week and occasional night, Monday, or holiday hours as needed.  Benefits include health and life insurance, optional dental and vision insurance, vacation and sick leave, holiday pay, retirement, and optional deferred compensation plans.
